Greed,
lust, envy, and vengeance—such things are seldom associated with the refined
world of antiquarian books. But in A Rare
& Deadly Issue, such human foibles may lurk behind the spate of sudden
deaths associated with a prominent rare book establishment in Los Angeles.
When Alex Harbolick, proprietor of The Deckled Edge, is killed by a hit-and-run driver, Jenny Maguire, a cataloguer in the shop, is convinced it was no accident. While the police dismiss her suspicions—and her—as irrational, Jenny concludes after two more murders that someone she knows well, perhaps even intimately, is the culprit.
Readers
of A Rare & Deadly Issue will
relish behind-the-scenes glimpses of a world in which a single book often sells
for more than a luxury car. Learn the “dirty little details”
of document forgery, unravel a tangled web of deception, and get acquainted with
a cast of entertaining, complex characters while enjoying this fun, compelling
read from mystery writer Marlena Thompson.
About the Author
Marlena
Thompsons's stories, articles, and poetry have been published in various
anthologies, literary and commercial magazines, and newspapers throughout the
country. She studied history at Queens College in New York and Leeds University
in England, and holds a master's degree in Library Science. She has worked as an
antiquarian book cataloguer in Los Angeles, and for several years ran her own
rare book business. She also has worked as a teacher, a curriculum writer, and a
bookseller, and, for the past six years, as a singer-
storyteller.
Marlena has lived and studied in England, taught in Sweden, and spent summers in
Spain, but loves Ireland. She visits at least once a year, and usually stays for
months at a time. Her passion for Ireland and Irish literature is evident in A
Rare&Deadly Issue.
“I
continue to write because I have more stories to tell,” Marlena says. “I
also hope to reach more people with my music and stories, especially those
who could use some extra cheer in their lives. After all, there’s
nothing more inspiriting than a lively tune and a well-told tale.”
