Polvoron
In this collection of short stories and fables, Michael Ramos conjures up the beauty and, at times, the self-destructive impulses that define the Filipino culture. A fisherman proves a point to his son while passing up a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity; a grandfather risks his meager wealth to win the affection of a grandson. These stories focus on the core unit of Filipino life, the family. Whether it be the illegitimate grandson from the province, or the underachieving son of a widowed mother, the heroes of these stories struggle to understand themselves while coping with the expectations of their extended families.

The collection also includes short lyrical tales, based on ancient tribal fables, that provide added depth to this portrait of a collective soul. Finely crafted and ambitious in their scope, these stories promise to resonate with any reader wishing to explore the ties to his or her own unique cultural heritage.

Michael Ramos is a first generation Filipino-American. He wrote these stories after traveling extensively in the Philippines to learn about his family’s heritage. His stories have appeared in The Indiana Review, Many Mountains Moving, and Prairie Schooner. He lives in Denver, Colorado with his wife and daughter.
